Truck bed mats cost so little it's easy to dismiss mats as a cheap but useless option for pickup truck protection. That idea misses the mark by a lot. Here are 5 additional reasons that the inexpensive liner mats come out on top when compared to some of the other bed liner choices.
Water pooling under anything in a truck bed makes a perfect place for rust to get a start. Drop in bed liners for example offer the perfect cover for water puddles especially forward in the corners of the bed. Most truck beds tilt to the front and water that can't get out the drain just sits there.
With a rubber bed mat any pools of water are easily seen and then easily stopped. When all you have to do is fold the mat back to inspect the drains, that's something you can and will do.
Somebody remarked upon seeing my new rubber truck bed mat that it was a shame that I hadn't glued it down. Actually leaving off the glue makes for a better system for sure. See, the mats aren't prone to fly away at all. It's partly because of the weight and partly because the mats lie flat and offer nothing for the wind to catch. Rubber bed mats stay in place and will not be gone with the wind.
Rubber mats roll out and that's all it takes to install one. Just get it in place at the back of the bed and remove any ties or tape and just give a gentle shove. Work it around the fender wells and any other obstacles and you're set. The only really hard part is just lifting it into the bed. That much rubber, if the mat is rubber, weighs quite a bit.
Drilling in a truck bed produces pain to this truck owner. Every hole drilled becomes a place for corrosion to get started. That's why just rolling out a mat looks so attractive. There's no drilling to damage the bed at all.
Being able to almost instantly get to the bed for inspection means less chance of damage happening under the mats. Poor fitting drop in bed liners vibrate and can wear paint away. Since the now bare metal lies hidden away under a difficult to remove liner, the bed may slowly start to rot and pit. That won't happen under a bed mat since the mat can't hurt the bed and the bed beneath the mat can be seen so easily.
Truck bed mats cost so little yet offer distinct advantages over other types of bed protection. Mats also work perfectly as protection for expensive spray on bed liners. Sacrifice the cheap mats and save the more permanent liner and keep it looking new for longer.
