A bed mat for a pickup works so well even if your truck already has a spray on bed liner or another expensive liner. You see, the cheap truck bed mats can do what other liners are not so good at. Here's what that can mean for your truck...
Of course a major reason for using bed mats is prevention of damage to the truck. One fast way that trucks suffer damage comes from impacts or hits on the metal of the bed. What you get with the right impact is a big, bad dent.
Scratches are one thing, dents are another. A little touch up paint can all but erase any sign of a scratch. Not so with dents. Especially the bigger dents will cost you large money to fix. Left alone they certainly create a truck worth less as a trade-in.
Dents often produce permanent damage. That's why stopping them has more value than just preventing scratches ever could.
Drop in plastic bed liners certainly excel at stopping dents. A rubber bed mat protects equally as well. In each case the liner material absorbs the shock of impact before it gets to the metal of the bed. The liner or the mat not only absorbs the shock, it spreads the force over a larger area making it all but impossible for a dent to get into the pickup bed.
Now think about a spray on bed liner. The spray coating includes rubbery texture which certainly includes some cushioning effect but you're still dealing with a paint coating. Consider this too when looking at spray liners.
The coating can and will suffer damage as a result of hard use. The damage can be fixed with another spray coat certainly. But it is still subject to damage. There's also the hassle of returning the truck to the applicator and waiting to get it back. And after all, the repair still is just one more coat of expensive paint, subject to damage again.
That's where a cheap bed mat right over a spray on lining can save the day and prevent damage to the truck bed. And then maybe as important, the spray liner can be spared by a mat riding over the more expensive liner as well.
A rubber bed mat or a carpet mat right over a pickup bed, even over a spray on liner, almost eliminates the chance for dents and does it at almost no cost to the pickup owner.
